A Study of Serum Magnesium, Zinc, Copper and Glycohemoglobin In Children With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

چکیده
Magnesium and some trace elements known to act as antioxidants or to be related directly to glucose metabolism may be altered in diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present work is to study the state of these elements in relation to disease duration, control and complications. The study included 25 children with type 1 diabetes and 13 apparently healthy controls studied for serum magnesium, zinc, copper and blood HbA1c. Serum magnesium, zinc and copper were significantly lower in diabetic children than in controls. Serum magnesium was significantly lower in cases with longer duration of disease (>5years). Serum magnesium level negatively correlated with the duration of diabetes. Serum zinc was significantly lower in uncontrolled than in controlled and in complicated than in uncomplicated cases. Serum zinc level correlated negatively with the degree of disease control (HbA1c). It is to be concluded that serum magnesium, zinc and copper are deficient in diabetic children. This deficiency may be related to disease control and/or complications. Supplementation of diabetic children with these nutrients may help in control of the disease and its complications.

The Effect of Swedish Massage on Glycohemoglobin in Children with Diabetes Mellitus
Objectives: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common endocrine disease in children. Massage therapy can improve glucose metabolism in DM. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Swedish massage on the Glycohemoglobin (HbA1c) in children with DM. Methods: This study was an semi-experimental (clinical trial) conducted on thirty-six children, 6-12 years old with (DM), recruited fro...

Background & Aims: Type one diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune disorder characterized by very low or absent of internal insulin. In the process of insulin secretion from pancreas, several micronutrients have role and zinc is the most important of them. Some recent studies have shown that serum zinc level is low in diabetic patients because of diuresis. This study aimed to evaluate the serum zi...
متن کاملAssessment of the Relation between Serum Zinc & magnesium Levels in Children with Febrile Convulsion
Background and Objectives: Febrile convulsion is one of the most common types of seizure in childhood. Its pathogenesis is unknown, so studying its cause is valuable. The purpose of this study was to determine the serum level of zinc and magnesium in children withfebrileconvulsion (F.C) (3 months to 6 years age). Patients and Methods: In this analytical case-control study, serum le...
متن کاملCellular Trace Element Changes in Type 1 Diabetes Patients
OBJECTIVE Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may lead to deficiencies in trace elements that have substantial functions in the human organism. Changes in serum magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) levels are correlated with metabolic control and diabetes complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-erythrocyte levels of trace elements and urinary Mg excretion following intr...
متن کاملTrace elements and oxidative stress in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus
Background The early imbalances of trace elements in type 1 diabetes (T1D) may cause disturbance of glucose metabolism and more oxidative stress that may enhance the development of insulin resistance and diabetic complications. We aim to evaluate the serum level of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and copper (Cu), the degree of oxidative stress and evaluate their relations to glycemic ...
